Nearly 3,200 cell phones were confiscated last year from prison inmates. The result was an ultimatum which the government faced. In being completely fed up with this messy situation, President Barack Obama signed a prohibition declaration. This officially bans the future use of cell phones by prisoners. The penalty for smuggling a cellular device? Permanent confiscation as well as an extra year in prison.
A prized possession is the current value of a cellular device for the prisoner. Some inmates will throw up cash ranging from $500 to $1000 just to get their hands on one. The government has high faith in reducing the amount of criminal activity outside of the prison, as a result of phone calls made from the “inside.” Through prohibiting prisoners from contacting their outside sources, it is expected that gang violence, fraud, and drug ditribution might actually decrease significantly. America can only hope that this new governmental law issues a true means of satisfaction for the time being.
